Description

This course explores the historical roots of the American tradition and considers how the American Revolution did not represent a radical break from Western civilization. It traces the origins of the American tradition through Hebraic and Christian belief, classical philosophy and law, British political experience, and the ideas and institutions of colonial and early Republican America.

Students will read excerpts from figures such as Plutarch, Aristotle, Cicero, Virgil, Saint Augustine, Tocqueville, Montesquieu, Burke, Adams, Hamilton, Gentz, and others. They will also read and examine America’s founding documents, especially the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Special attention is given to Russell Kirk’s The Roots of American Order, which serves as a guide and framework.

This course is available to Certificate students only.
